NORTH QLD v EASTS

Wizard Cup Minor Semi (Loser eliminated)

Dairy Farmers Stadium, Friday September 1, 5.30pm

Referee: Brett Suttor

THE STORY: North Queensland will need to urgently arrest a worrying form slide which has seen it win just one of its last six games. Remarkably Easts is two wins away from a grand final, a fortnight after being humbled 50-30 by wooden spooner Ipswich. The last time these sides met it was a 10-all draw in Townsville on July 22. Extra time in Wizard Cup finals are unlimited golden point, swapping sides every five minutes.

THE STAT: Both teams have found it hard to penetrate defences in recent weeks, with the Young Guns scoring three tries in the past two games and Easts posting four. However, the Tigers have only allowed 10 points to the opposition over the same period.

THE STAR: Mark Henry is back for his 14th Wizard Cup game of the year after an encouraging debut stint in the NRL. Henry, Clint Amos, Brenton Bowen, Ray Cashmere, Josh Hannay and Neil Sweeney are all eligible to play Wizard Cup finals past this weekend, as would be Robert Tanielu.

CHANGES: NORTH QLD – In: Mark Henry. Out: Josh Hannay.
EASTS – No announced changes.

CHARGES: None.

Wizard Cup finals

September 01, 2006 12:00am

ELIMINATION FINAL

North Qld v Easts
Dairy Farmers Stadium. Tonight 5.30

NORTH QLD: The Young Guns have only one win from their last six matches and face a five-day turnaround from last weekend's loss to Redcliffe. Josh Hannay has been evelated to the NRL for his last match with the Cowboys, releasing talented utility Mark Henry to return to the Young Guns. Henry, who transferred from the Central Comets last year, has been named to partner Mark Dalle Cort in the centres. At their last meeting, NQ and Easts played a 10-all draw in Townsville. Former Tigers prop Leigh Coghill will line up against his old club in the NQ interchange bench.

EASTS: Coach Michael Booth expects a repetition of last week's strong defensive effort in the 12-6 win over Tweed Heads, but wants more variety in attack. Experienced halves Luke Branighan and Matt Lockyer will be key men as they tackle in-form opposites Brent McConnell and Shane Muspratt. The Tigers will field an unchanged squad, with centre Shane Neumann holding David Georgiou out of the side after a big game.

Must be noisy at the ground. I've tried to call a couple of people at the game to see how the Guns went but they're not answering.

Bummer. Not a good end to the season for the Guns after dominating all year. Look's like some of the Cowboys bad habits have flowed through.

Mad Monday for both teams now.

Young Guns Bow Out

Match Report 1 Sep 2006

Fighting all the way the NQ Toyota Young Guns bowed out of season 2006 with an 18-28 loss to the East's Tigers at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

An arm wrestle first half resulted in a 10-8 lead to East's, while the second half started badly for the Young Guns and by the 51st minute they trailed 8-22.

Digging deep the Young Guns came back through a Mark Henry try and closed the gap to 18-22 before East's put the match beyond doubt with a late converted try.

Mark Henry's two try effort was a highlight while Brent McConnell, who leaves for the Brisbane Bronco's never stoped trying and was rewarded with a clever try.

For East's David Tyrell also crossed for two tries while former Cowboy Steven Goodhew played an enterprising match.

This match was also significant as the last appearance for Captain Danny Strickland and fullback Jason Barsley both who will now retire from the Queensland Wizard Cup competition.

East's Tigers 28 (David Tyrell 2, Martin Allen, Mark McKenzie, Steven Goodhew tries, Luke Branighan 4 goals) d Toyota Young Guns 18 ( Mark Henry 2, Brent McConnell, Jamie Frizzo tries, Brent McConnell 1 goal).

Tyrrell Touchdown Clinches it For Tigers

A TRY to rookie David Tyrrell five minutes from fulltime has propelled Easts to within a game of the Wizard Cup grand final, eliminating North Queensland 28-18 at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Friday.

In a fairytale result a Tigers side which started the season with just three wins in the first 10 rounds managed to eliminate the competition’s reigning champions before a fiercely parochial crowd.

The decisive try to teenager Tyrrell came from a wonderfully orchestrated pass by centre Mark McKenzie; the former Queensland Rangers captain slicing through when the game rested at the balance at 22-18.

With the match regularly see-sawing, Easts led 10-4 until Jamie Frizzo scored out wide a minute before halftime to make it 10-8 to the Tigers.

Responding after the break, Easts posted tries in the 47th and 51st minutes to blow out the lead to 22-8.

North Queensland then took its turn, striking back with tries in the 55th and 58th minutes to Mark Henry and Brent McConnell.

Halfback McConnell’s effort was a carbon copy of so many he has scored the past three seasons, taking the bit between the teeth and running solo when the game needed something special.

At 22-18 and with more than 20 minutes remaining, it was truly heart-in-the-mouth material. The sudden shifts in momentum made it anybody’s guess as to who the victor would be.

Two players to stand up in particular for Easts were hooker Steve Goodhew and veteran prop Steele Retchless.

A long-time member of the North Queensland development system, Goodhew returned to hurt his former team with deadly scampers from dummy-half and a great display in wide passing.

The flame-haired rake set a blistering pace in one particular scoot from the play-the-ball, running 30m to score in impressive fashion.

Yet as dangerous as the Tigers inroads were in the centre of the field, it was out wide where they eventually sealed the game.

Recruited just this season from Toowoomba’s club competition, 26-year-old McKenzie tested the line, broke through and then offloaded in a well-timed movement which saw Tyrrell touch down near to the posts.

Easts now faces the loser of tomorrow’s major semi between Toowoomba and Redcliffe.

In previous years the Tigers contested the 1997 and 2004 Wizard Cup grand finals, losing in gut-wrenching circumstance on both occasions.

North Queensland’s defeat means a possible farewell to three of the competition’s standout performers in recent times – Daniel Strickland, Jason Barsley and Mark Dalle Cort.

All three were selected for representative teams this year (Strickland declining due to work commitments), but have not been offered Young Guns contracts for 2007.

EASTS 28 (David Tyrrell 2, Marty Allen, Steve Goodhew, Mark McKenzie tries; Luke Branighan 4 goals) d NORTH QUEENSLAND 18 (Mark Henry 2, Jamie Frizzo, Brent McConnell tries; Brenton Bowen goal) at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Easts torpedo Guns' season

By ANTONY STEWART
02sep06

RETIRING Young Guns captain Daniel Strickland said his side had no one to blame but themselves after being eliminated from the Queensland Cup finals race by Easts at Dairy Farmers Stadium last night.

In a sad farewell for Strickland and a handful of other North Queensland players, including Brent McConnell, Mark Dalle Cort, Jason Barsley and coach Mick Crawley, the Young Guns went down 28-18.

It was the club's third consecutive defeat and while the home team showed glimpses of how good they can be, they were ultimately let down by an inconsistent display.

Despite coming close to pulling off what have been a remarkable come-from-behind victory, Strickland said the defending premiers probably didn't deserve to advance any further into the finals.

"In hindsight we were our own worst enemies and we probably don't deserve to go on to be honest," he said.

"We just haven't put it together in the last three weeks, we've shown glimpses of what we can do and, no disrespect to any of the teams we have played in the last three weeks, but I think we could have beaten any of those teams with a bit of better ball control and better execution.

"But that's what finals are all about, putting it together at the right time and we didn't."

After all but letting the game slip from their grasp by conceding two tries in five minutes following the halftime break, the Guns showed tremendous character to give the Tigers a few nervous moments at the back end of the game.

From 22-8 down with 15 minutes remaining, Mark Henry's second try of the evening, followed by a nifty piece of work close to the line from halfback McConnell three minutes later, had North Queensland within striking distance at 22-18.

However, that was as close as it got and when Easts winger David Tyrell scored his second of the evening it spelled the end of the Young Guns' season.

While he held hopes of stunning fightback win, Strickland conceded the Young Guns had left their run too late.

"We had too much work to do in the end and even though we probably still could have done it – full credit to Easts," he said.

Despite running with a strong breeze and having the better of the play in the first half, the Young Guns trailed 10-8 at halftime.

It looked like being worse for North Queensland, but a scintillating kick-and-chase play involving McConnell, Barsley and Jamie Frizzo in the final minute of the half saw the home team close the gap to two points.

Easts will play the loser of today's qualifying final between Toowoomba and Redcliffe in next week's preliminary final.

EASTS TIGERS 28 (D Tyrell 2, M Allen, S Goodhew, M Cantoni; L Branighan 4 cons) d YOUNG GUNS 18 (M Henry 2, J Frizzo, B McConnell tries; B Bowen con).
