WYNNUM MANLY v NORTH QLD
BMD Kougari Oval, Sunday August 13, 3pm
Referee: Michael Wise
THE STORY: Wynnum Manly considered itself unlucky to lose 18-14 to the Young Guns earlier this year and will be keen for another good showing. A big crowd should be on hand to cheer the Seagulls home, given it is the club’s last home game of the year and the Australian Primary Schools titles kick-off at Kougari straight after this match.
THE STAT: Last year Scott Smith tallied 25 points in the QANTAS Player of the Year award to be among the leading contenders. With reduced opportunities at North Queensland he has not earned a single vote this year. However he has earned considerable respect playing for the Herbert River Crushers in the Townsville league. Although forced to travel three-hour round trips to play ‘home’ games in Ingham, he has displayed great passion for his adopted club.
THE STAR: Schoolboy speedster Obe Geia sizzled with two second half tries for the Young Guns against Redcliffe last week. Between Geia, Brenton Bowen and Rodney Barba, there should be some eye-catching tries from this game.
CHANGES: WYNNUM MANLY – No announced changes.
NORTH QLD – In: Brenton Bowen, Scott Smith, Dean Payne. Out: Neil Sweeney, Clint Amos, Rod Jensen.
CHARGES: None.

Abit about the game from XXXX Cap at RLeague
Wynnum led 16 - 6 at half time after scoring a couple of good tries from kicks in the first half.
Two tries to the Young Guns evened up the score then North Queensland withstood plenty of attack from the Gulls in the middle part of the second half. Wynnum failed to score in three straight sets near the line then allowed NQ in shortly after to trail 16 - 20 and the home team looked in trouble.
Wynnum however drew level again at 20-all when Cashmere lost the ball from the re-start and Dalziel-Don went over on the next tackle. McConnell scored and converted with 8 minutes to go for a six-point advantage to the Guns. Brian Jellick replied for the Gulls with 4 minutes left and Rodney Barba landed the conversion for a fitting draw.
All in all, a good quality and entertaining match.

Seagulls All Square With Guns (http://qrl.com.au/display.php?pg_id=2138)
http://www.qrl.com.au/images_lib/WynnumMerchandiseWide.gif
FOR at least the second time this season North Queensland has been unsettled by an old acquaintance, as Brian Jellick scored a crucial try for Wynnum Manly to clinch a 26-all draw at BMD Kougari Oval.
In what was a battle between first and second-last, former Cowboys first grader Jellick crossed with four minutes remaining, his try converted by Mackay native Rodney Barba.
The draw brought memories of the Round 10 battle between North Queensland and Redcliffe when former Young Gun Rory Bromley scored a try on the hooter to steal the game.
As a result of the Wynnum contest, Toowoomba now jumps above the Young Guns on the Wizard Cup ladder. Next Saturday the two NRL feeder teams meet in a crunch match at Dairy Farmers Stadium to decide the minor premiership.
There the Young Guns are sure to benefit from a feverish home crowd, just as Wynnum was able to do on Sunday in front of the raucous ‘Chook Pen’.
The Seagulls actually led North Queensland 16-6 at halftime after successive tries to Tangi Ropati and Gary Winter.
Ropati’s four-pointer was dazzling, coming after Luke Dalziel-Don swooped on a Jim Ahmat chip and smoothly found his man out wide. Moments earlier Ropati had chased down Brent McConnell on a long break in a defining moment of the game.
North Queensland always threatened to blow the match apart, boasting strikepower across the park. As was the case, the Guns returned from halftime to turn the match in their favour 20-16 with tries to Brett Firman, James Andersen and Ray Cashmere.
Yet no sooner had Cashmere crossed the white stripe than he was hit in a bell-ringer by Jellick from the kick-off. Jolting the ball free, Jellick cleared the path for Dalziel-Don to score with a strong run shortly after.
All squared up at 20-all, the game had just on 15 minutes to run after Daniel Evans missed his conversion attempt.
Following several decisions against their side, the Wynnum faithful were baying for blood and they were unrelenting whenever the Young Guns coughed up possession.
One particular player to feel their ire was the experienced Firman, who dropped the ball across the line as the clock wound down. Forward Andersen also earned their jeers after a similar indiscretion in the first half.
However there was stunned silence when halfback McConnell notched a dogged try, surging through the defence with great leg drive and then adding the extras himself.
Running out of time, Wynnum needed a hero and it came in the form of Jellick, finding open space after lead-up from Daniel Evans and Ahmat. Under pressure, Barba converted for a result that gives the Baysiders great confidence heading into their final round clash with Tweed Heads. That match will be at 3pm next Sunday at the Piggabeen Complex and will have major bearing on the finals.
WYNNUM MANLY 26 (Tangi Ropati, Brian Jellick, John Bruce, Luke Dalziel-Don, Gary Winter tries; Rodney Barba 2, Daniel Evans goals) drew NORTH QUEENSLAND 26 (Jason Barsley, Brett Firman, Brent McConnell, Ray Cashmere, James Andersen tries; Brenton Bowen, Brent McConnell, Scott Smith goals) at BMD Kougari Oval.
