He's a 19yo hooker who made his debut last week against Ipswich. He's from from Longreach (attended St Brendans College Yepoon) who joined the Cowboys as a 17yo. He's been playing for University in the Townsville comp. Also a member of the Townsville under 19 Foley Shield side.

CENTRAL v NORTH QUEENSLAND

Browne Park, Saturday July 15, 7.30pm.
Referee: Justin Eastwood

THE STORY: The northern derby is traditionally one of the best attended Wizard Cup games of the year, played between two clubs with a sister-club affiliation. Central will be hoping to get a roll on with four of the club’s last five games at home and an outside chance of making the finals. North Queensland still leads the competition.

THE STAT: From the team which beat Ipswich 42-36 last week, the Young Guns have added five players with NRL experience, plus Queensland Residents representative Scott Bolton. Central has not made any announced changes from the side which accounted for Souths Logan 32-14 in Blackwater last week.

THE STAR: David Faiumu was at the Comets as recent as 2003, but now has 47 NRL games to his name since switching to North Queensland. He also played a role in New Zealand’s shock Tri Nations triumph last year.

CHANGES:

CENTRAL – No Changes Announced.

NORTH QLD – In: Jason Barsley, Gavin Cooper, Shane Muspratt, David Faiumu, Shane Tronc, Scott Bolton. Out: Mark Henry, Dean Payne, Steve Southern, Brent McConnell, Dean Limpus, Scott Smith.

Comets tipped to breathe fire

THE North Queensland Young Guns are expecting a hostile reception when they take on sister club Central Comets in Rockhampton tonight.

The match is one of the highlights on the Comets' Queensland Cup calendar and usually draws a big crowd to Browne Park. The inclusion of NRL regulars Shane Tronc and David Faiumu, a former Comets players, in the Young Guns team has added to the interest for the locals.
"We're expecting it to be fairly physical," Young Guns coach Mick Crawley said yesterday.
"I would say being on their home ground on a Saturday night it will be a difficult game for us."
Crawley said the fact the Comets, who sit two wins outside the top five, were still in semi-finals contention would add to their motivation.
"I read somewhere this week that out of their last five games, four are at home and they are hoping to win most of the four and if they do they will put themselves in semi-final calculations," he said.
Crawley is hoping the Young Guns will bounce back from their lacklustre performance against Ipswich in Ayr last weekend.
The ladder-leading Young Guns were pushed all the way by last-placed Ipswich before winning 42-36.
Crawley blamed the below-par performance on the fact the team had two weekends off because of the City-Country clash and a bye.
Crawley said he had set his team a challenge for the remaining six rounds before the semi-finals start.
"Our goal is to improve each week for the next few weeks," Crawley said.
"We came back after three weeks off last week and were a bit rusty.
"This week is our second game back and hopefully we will be a bit better than we were against Ipswich."
This week the Young Guns will be strengthened by the presence of Tronc and Faiumu as will as the return of Jason Barsley, Shane Muspratt, Scott Bolton and Ben Lowe who were rested from the Jets game after playing three days earlier for Queensland Residents.
Centre Dean Payne was brought into the Young Guns team yesterday and Jamie Frizzo moved on to the wing after Brenton Bowen was called into the Cowboys team for the trip to Penrith as 18th man.

Teams: Young Guns: Jason Barsley, Neil Sweeney, Dean Payne, Gavin Cooper, Jamie Frizzo, Shane Muspratt, Brady Payne, Ben Lowe, Clint Amos, Daniel Strickland (c), Shane Tronc, David Faiumu, Robert Tanielu. Interchange: Kam Wilkinson, Jim Andersen, Scott Bolton, Sam Faust.

Central Comets: Jimmy McConachy, Shannon Stitt, Guy Williams, Misi Taulapapa, McConkie Tauasa, Scott Porter, Cheyenne Motu, Matt Rua, Wayne Barnett, Tyron Haynes, Peter Penaia, Jade Wogand, Aaron Sweeney. Interchange: Mark Siniula, Andrew Dale, Michael Esdale, Herewini Rangi.

THE DOOR is ajar for Central Comet Misi Taulapapa to work his way back into the NRL, after the former New Zealand Warrior shone in Saturday’s 22-4 loss against the North Queensland Young Guns.

Sacked last month from the Warriors, Taulapapa scored the first try of the match at Browne Park and greatly impressed NQ coach Mick Crawley.

The Young Guns ran with one of their strongest sides of the year, buoyed by the inclusion of David Faiumu, Shane Tronc and Gavin Cooper.

However it wasn’t until the final quarter of the match that the northerners sealed the local derby, having led 10-4 at halftime.

“It was a tough game to find momentum in,” said Crawley, a week after his charges beat Ipswich 42-36.

“It was a stop-start sort of affair and I think that’s the way the Comets wanted it. They walked to the first scrum and it seemed they were looking for a slower tempo to suit their bigger guys.

“Those couple of late tries…in the last 20 minutes I think our fitness told.”

It was a marked advancement on Central’s Round Seven performance, when the Comets were towelled 56-12 by the Young Guns and judges struggled to allocate QANTAS Player of the Year points.

Crawley said it was obvious that opposing coach Matt Parish had shaped a good squad over time, tipping North Queensland’s sister-club for a big year in 2007.

“They’ve definitely improved and I know Matt is hoping to keep most of the players together for next year,” Crawley said.

“I believe they’ll become a force in years to come. In particular I thought Misi Taulapapa had a strong game. If we hadn’t marked Gavin Cooper up on him, I’d say Misi would have caused us a lot of trouble.”

North Queensland’s own Players’ Player award went to teenage halfback Brady Payne, who with each game looks to be stepping up a notch.

Neil Sweeney and Ben Lowe were also strong and Crawley revealed afterwards that Lowe had gone within a whisker of making his NRL debut in previous weeks.

The Young Guns still occupy first place on the Wizard Cup ladder, but have Easts, Burleigh, Redcliffe, Wynnum Manly and Toowoomba in a tough run home.

At long odds to make the finals, Central has just four games left against Tweed Heads, Ipswich, Norths and Easts.
