Bowen fired up for Guns clash
By ADAM GARDINI (gardinia@nqn.newsltd.com.au)
http://townsvillebulletin.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,3600,5182598,00.jpgBrenton Bowen, pictured in action for the Cowboys against Penrith in the NRL, will be out to impress for the Young Guns against Ipswich in Ayr tonight
WINGER Brenton Bowen hopes to turn the initial disappointment of being dropped from the NRL into a motivator when he lines up for the Young Guns in tonight's clash against Ipswich in Ayr.
Bowen was considered unlucky by many to have been dropped from the Cowboys' left wing after North Queensland's 20-12 loss to the Bulldogs on the Gold Coast three weeks ago - a game in which he scored a 90m intercept try. The 23-year-old was replaced by Neil Sweeney the following week against St George Illawarra before both wingers were overlooked for last weekend's clash with Souths following the return from injury of Ashley Graham.
Bowen, who boasts an impeccable try-scoring strike rate of 13 tries in 28 NRL matches, had initially been disappointed over his omission but said a chat with assistant coach Grant Bell had helped him keep his head down in a bid to win his spot back.
Tonight's clash against the last-placed Jets at Rugby Park will mark his first match since being dropped, with the Young Guns having had a fortnight's break due to the annual City-Country clash and then last weekend's bye.
"I was a bit upset when I got dropped after the Bulldogs game and not to be able to get a look in for the Souths game," Bowen said.
"I spoke to 'Belly' and he pointed out I needed to be more aggressive in my running.
"That Bulldogs game, I wasn't aggressive enough. I had a look at the video and I could see for myself.
"There were patches in that game I thought I went pretty good and times that I didn't.
"It wasn't something that I was aware of until they told me after the game."
With the Cowboys yet to settle on a regular left winger and intense competition for spots following Graham's return, Bowen said he was intent on upping the ante in his carries of the ball tonight.
Along with the inclusion of Bowen and Sweeney for tonight's clash, the Young Guns have been boosted by NRL regular Steve Southern, who is expected to play a large part of the 80 minutes in a bid to regain match fitness following a layoff with a knee injury.
Brett Firman was initially named at five-eighth but has been ruled out due to complications with a groin injury.
Hooker Scott Smith has been promoted on to the bench with Brady Payne moving into five-eighth in Firman's place.
Teenage hooker Kam Wilkinson, 19, will make his Queensland Cup debut for the Young Guns.
Kick-off is at 4pm.

NORTH QLD Toyota Young Guns v IPSWICH
Match Preview 7 Jul 2006
http://www.cowboys.com.au/uploads/image/220.gifRugby Park, Ayr, Saturday July 8, 4.00pm.
Referee: Gavin Morris
THE STORY: League leader North Queensland is back from two weekends off and has undergone significant changes since its last-up 44-6 win against Tweed Heads. The Guns have not named most of their Queensland Residents representatives, but the inclusion of Brenton Bowen, Steve Southern and Brett Firman should excite the Ayr community.
THE STAT: 42-4. That was the embarrassing halftime score the last time these sides met. The Ipswich players and coach Trevor Gillmeister, a noted defensive specialist, won't need any reminders.
THE STAR: Dean Payne has only played five games for the Young Guns this year after being an integral part of the 2005 premiership side. He wouldn't like that he has scored just one try this year to brother Aaron's four.
CHANGES: NORTH QLD - In: Dean Payne, Brenton Bowen, Brett Firman, Steve Southern, Ben Lowe, Kam Wilkinson, Dean Limpus. Out: Jason Barsley, Ray Cashmere, Mark Dalle Cort, Leigh Coghill, Scott Bolton, Scott Smith, Greg Byrnes.
IPSWIH - In: Ricky Bird, Matt McPhee, Danny Coburn. Out: Luke Walker, Bevan Heuir, Mananui Te Heu Heu.

Young Guns Cast Off Rusty Spurs (http://qrl.com.au/display.php?pg_id=1995)
NORTH Queensland Young Guns coach Mick Crawley is confident his charges have blown off the cobwebs after a scratchy 42-36 win against Ipswich in Ayr on Saturday.
Playing before a large crowd at Rugby Park, home of the Burdekin Roosters, the Young Guns conceded the opening try of the match to Ipswich and trailed the Jets 20-18 at halftime.
Certainly, without representative players Jason Barsley, Shane Muspratt, Mark Dalle Cort and Scott Bolton, the reigning premiers were given a solid run for their money by the much-improved visitors.
“I won’t downplay Ipswich’s performance, because I thought they were good,” Crawley said.
“But it’s been a few weeks since we played due to the bye and the City Country match, and I anticipated we’d be a little rusty.
“Our ball control, ability to get into the game and ability to maintain pressure on the opposition were all down.
“We gave an opportunity to a few younger players and there were some good individual performances, but as a team we just didn’t gel.”
Despite the closeness of the score and the fact that the teams finished with seven tries apiece, Crawley said he was always confident enough that the result would “not be in jeopardy”.
His cause was assisted by a second half injury to Ipswich playmaker Ricky Bird, disrupting an effective combination with evergreen Travis Baker. Not surprisingly Tully product Joel Reithmuller was another noted performer for the Jets, having been closely scouted by the Cowboys as a youngster.
It was a brief avalanche of tries in the second half that gave North Queensland the upper hand and the Guns did not relent afterwards. Sam Faust was awarded the Players’ Player award for the Young Guns, while Robert Tanielu and Steve Southern gave their pack plenty of punch.
The community of Ayr turned out in force for the match, another successful venture into the rural sector for the Wizard Cup.
“My wife came down to watch and she ended up having to park several blocks away, because there were so many cars about,” Crawley said.
“I think the food ran out pretty early too, which is always a good indicator, and the support was fantastic.”
North Queensland faces the Central Comets in Rockhampton next Saturday night, while Ipswich hosts Tweed Heads at QLD Group Stadium on Sunday.
