NORTHS v NORTH QLD
Bishop Park, Sunday June 11, 3.00pm
Referee: Phil Haines
THE STORY: Unable to win a game three weeks ago, Norths is now in a position where it is a realistic threat to the high-flying Young Guns. The Devils have good wins against Central and Easts behind them and are starting to welcome back players from injury. North Queensland has been untouchable for much of the year, but has a line-up unsettled by the Cowboys’ NRL commitments.
THE STAT: Robert Tanielu played just short of 50 games for Norths in three seasons with the Devils. This year, in his first game against his former club, he played a particularly aggressive brand of football. He was later charged with a reckless high tackle, but was successful in downgrading it to careless.
THE STAR: With all the attention on the Norths’ other young star Israel Folau, Will Chambers has been slightly overlooked. Just turned 18, the Devils’ centre is a big talent for the future. Young Guns halfback Brady Payne is another 18-year-old in the spotlight.
CHANGES:
NORTHS – In: Smith Samau, Will Scanlon. Out: Brendan Afitu, Steve Franciscus.
NORTH QLD – In: Ashley Graham, Brady Payne. Out: Brett Firman, Greg Byrnes.
CHARGES: NORTHS – Trent Henrick (Grade 1 Careless High Tackle, Early Plea, 0wks + 56pts).

Not sure yet Stido. I'm building retaining walls at home this weekend - will depend how much progress I make.

Guns Gearing Up For Assassins
NORTH Queensland is eyeing off early-season assassins the Tweed Heads Seagulls after emerging from Round 13 with a 22-12 win against Norths at Bishop on Sunday.
Playing at less than full strength the Young Guns survived a torrid encounter against the Devils, who despite the loss, still look like realistic finals contenders.
Indeed, NQ coach Mick Crawley was quick to praise the performance of his weekend rivals, now two points adrift of the top five.
“We were knocked around a bit. Norths really tested us,” Crawley said.
“They are fairly good defensively. I thought they were close to the best team in that department of the sides we’ve played this year.”
The Young Guns led 16-6 at halftime, but the competition co-leaders never had things their own way.
Aside from the loss of key players Brett Firman and Daniel Strickland to the Cowboys, winger Neil Sweeney was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury.
His place went to high school student Obi Geia, while 18-year-old Brady Payne ran the show at halfback in Firman’s absence. It was Payne’s first 80-minute effort in the State League.
In the aftermath of his team’s seventh win of its last eight games, Crawley said the Young Guns would relish the chance to go face-to-face next Saturday with Tweed Heads, a side which beat them 54-16 back in April.
“We are very keen, that’s for sure,” Crawley said.
“They dusted us up down there earlier this year and we are looking forward to having them at home this time around.”
It remains to be seen whether the Young Guns will keep a similar team for next week, with the return of representative players and the Cowboys’ disappointing form meaning changes could be in the wind.
Both centres Ashley Graham and Mark Henry have continued to maintain pressure on those above, both scoring tries and being among the best on ground against Norths.
Crawley described the pair as “outstanding” and said Henry, yet to make his NRL debut, had “played well every week”.
While the Guns plan a get-square with the Seagulls, Norths is priming itself for a pivotal clash against Burleigh at Pizzey Park next Saturday.
The game will effectively be for double points, with both teams clambering for fifth spot on the table. A win would see Norths leapfrog the Bears and also move ahead of Souths Logan, drawn to have the bye next week.
NORTH QUEENSLAND 22 (Mark Henry, Mark Dalle Cort, Clint Amos, Ashley Graham tries; Brent McConnell 3 goals) d NORTHS 12 (Jackson Nicolau, Brendan Afitu tries; Jackson Nicolau 2 goals) at Bishop Park.

Obi got a game. Awesome. Played against him and he's pretty hard to stop. Surprises me that he got a run before Cameron Heading and Michael Rose.

No surprise to me, he has a lot more talent then Heading and Rose.
Obe's main strength is his speed of the mark and his change of pace, always a hard guy to defend against. You have to be up in his face otherwise he'll make you look like a fool.

Gee he's made our defence look like paper sometimes. TBH I don't see anyone from our division becoming outstanding first graders but hopefully for Obie and the Cowboys he along with others prove me wrong.
If he stays injury free then it will go a long way towards his career. I know a young prop from Charters Towers. He could have made it in the NRL but he broke his leg and since then his confidence has been shattered.

Spot on exactly who I was talking about. If you seen him when he was 14 and 15 you would have thought he'd go a long way.

Yeah, he was a very promising kid. I remember when I was a selector for the Townsville side for the 2002 NQ Carnival, Matty was way above everyone else in the front row department. And He had good speed for a big boy.
