ROOKIE Storm star Greg Inglis was sensationally ruled out of State-of-Origin II last night after scans revealed the teenage fullback has stress fractures in his back.

In a dramatic development that will seriously affect Queensland's chances of levelling the series on Wednesday week in Brisbane, Storm medical staff said Inglis, 19, would be sidelined for two to four weeks.

The news came hours after Inglis was named on the wing in a revamped Maroons line-up. Queensland has the right to have Inglis inspected by its team doctor, but is expected to accept Storm's diagnosis.

"Ultimately they have the final say, but we are recommending Greg needs to be rested for at least two weeks," Storm physiotherapist Mary Toomey said last night.

"The radiology report today has shown he has an acute lumbar stress fracture. It is something we have been aware of for some time and it is a problem a number of young athletes playing at an elite level face. We have been managing his load as best we can, but something happened in the game on the weekend and he has fractured them.

With Inglis out, livewire Cowboys fullback Matt Bowen may earn a reprieve, while Penrith fullback Rhys Wesser could also come into the reckoning.
Bowen and forwards David Stagg and Matthew Scott were axed yesterday.
Test fullback Karmichael Hunt was selected to make his Origin debut in place of Bowen, while Roosters utility Chris Flannery and Broncos hard man Tonie Carroll earned recalls in the wake of the 17-16 loss to the Blues in the series opener in Sydney.

Brisbane centre Justin Hodges retained his spot, despite missing the past two games for the Broncos with a hamstring injury. Both he and Carroll (knee cartilage) were chosen subject to fitness tests.
Storm lock Dallas Johnson retained his place, but admitted last night he feared he would miss out.

He had a mixed debut in Origin I, but a strong game for Storm against the Roosters at Olympic Park on Saturday night is believed to have earned Johnson a reprieve.
"I wasn't feeling real confident about my chances, so I'm just glad the selectors have shown some faith in me," Johnson said.

"I'm desperate to help us square the series. I think I know what to expect from Origin now, and I'm sure I'll be better for the experience."
NSW selectors made just one forced change, with St George Illawarra prop Luke Bailey called in to replace the injured Luke O'Donnell.
Bailey, who was ineligible for the opening match because of suspension, has been in devastating form since returning to the Dragons.
Bailey was named on the bench, with Steve Simpson coming into the starting side to replace O'Donnell (thumb).

The Blues' Origin I hero Brett Finch has retained the halfback's role.
Blues selector Bob McCarthy said the Blues had seen little need to make changes, saying the selection meeting "took a good five minutes". "After the way we won the last time, it's pretty hard to change anyone around. Brett did the job last time, so he'll look after us again," he said.

With Inglis out, livewire Cowboys fullback Matt Bowen may earn a reprieve, while Penrith fullback Rhys Wesser could also come into the reckoning.

I don't know if he'd go as well as a winger but as he said earlier in the week - he'll play anywhere.

Maroons struggling

MELBOURNE Storm whiz-kid Greg Inglis has no chance of playing for Queensland in Origin II because of a back injury.
Broncos pair Tonie Carroll and Justin Hodges are also set to join him on the sidelines this week.
The upheaval in the Maroons camp after the naming of the side yesterday will see NSW firm as favourites to clinch the series in the return clash at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow week after the Blues won the opening match 17-16 in Sydney on May 24.
Queensland selectors named a squad they thought had the firepower in attack and defence to negate NSW but by 7pm last night it was a case of back to the drawing board.
First, the news came through from Melbourne that Inglis faced up to four weeks on the sidelines because of stress fractures of the lower back and then, it became apparent Carroll's place in the side was in jeopardy, with the crash-tackling forward to be assessed by the Broncos medical staff today.
Hodges is speaking up his chances of playing but he was initially told he would be sidelined for three to five weeks with the three weeks up on Origin night.
It is a huge gamble by Queensland coach Mal Meninga to give Hodges his chance because if he breaks down in camp it will be disruptive and then there is the fear he may break down early in the match.
Meninga could not be contacted last night but chairman of selectors Des Morris said the selection of Hodges and Carroll could be viewed as an act of desperation but they were priority players and it was worth the risk selecting them and seeing if they could prove their fitness by Friday morning at the latest.
"I'd rather not discuss the cover we have in mind but we have other guys we can contact straight away (if Carroll and Hodges are ruled out)," Morris said.
Inglis's injury caught everyone by surprise and Morris admitted there was no clear-cut replacement although it is understood in-form Canberra fullback Clinton Schifcofske could be given a chance on the wing where he has played once for Queensland. Raiders teammates Adam Mogg and Craig Frawley also were in the frame.
The QRL's medical officer, Roy Saunders, will view scans of the Inglis injury today before the 19-year-old is ruled out of the side that goes into camp in Brisbane tomorrow.
Fullback Karmichael Hunt is the only rookie but he played for Australia in the trans-Tasman Test on May 5. Hunt replaces Cowboys star Matt Bowen while second-rowers David Stagg (Broncos) and Matt Scott (Cowboys) also have been axed.
Morris said he was not "overly disappointed" in the displays of Stagg and Scott in Origin I but the selectors had gone for a couple of "known hitters" – Carroll and Carl Webb – in the second-row. Webb came off the bench in Origin I.
"We beefed up the forwards so hopefully that will take some of the pressure off Darren Lockyer," Morris said. "Darren has been tremendous at five-eighth and although we haven't been able to get a win in the series I hardly think it's his fault."
Morris said there had been debate over several selections but the possibility of switching Lockyer to fullback to bring Scott Prince into the side barely rated a mention.
In a reshuffle of the three-quarter line, Steve Bell moves from wing to centre with Brent Tate switched to the wing. Whether that remains the same after the injury to Inglis remains to be seen.
Morris ruled out moving Broncos utility Shaun Berrigan from the bench to centre where he has starred for Brisbane.
"I think Berro will stay in an interchange role because we want to use him close to the action where we believe he can be most effective," he said.
Morris said several players who were in contention for Origin selection had turned in mediocre games at the weekend.
"There were some blokes we did not pick who we thought would have put their hand up (for selection)," he said.

Slater is looking at another 2 weeks suspension after a tackle on the weekend.

I wonder if they've given Matt Sing a call?

CALOUNDRA junior Adam Mogg has been called into the XXXX Queensland Maroons team for State of Origin II, replacing injured winger Greg Inglis.

A member of the Canberra Raiders NRL club, 28-year-old Mogg will join the squad when it enters camp in Brisbane on Wednesday morning.

Mogg has a thorough Queensland Rugby League background, having featured for the Redcliffe Dolphins in four Queensland Wizard Cup grand finals, represented Queensland Residents and been a past winner of the Courier-Mail Best and Fairest Award.

The decision to omit Inglis comes after consultation between the medical staff of the XXXX Queensland Maroons and the Melbourne Storm.

Considering the nature of the injury (stress fracture of the lower back) and the advice of the Melbourne Storm, Queensland has decided against flying Inglis to Brisbane for further assessment.

It is understood he will be sidelined for a number of weeks due to the injury.

The XXXX Maroons will now have two debutants for the must-win clash against New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium on June 14, with Mogg to start alongside rookie fullback Karmichael Hunt.

I can't believe the moronic QLD selectors fall for this bull**** NSW reverse psychology year after year. The more they say 'Qld should put Locky at fullback, they should keep Bowen in the team', the less likely it is we're going to do it. It's like we're trying to keep them second guessing by picking a **** team. I'm angry.

You're right about that, the names Bowen, Wesser & Slater come to mind to cover Inglis. But Mogg being named isn't all doom & gloom. Let's hope he can perform at SOO level.
