State Of Origin II Squad

1. Darren Lockyer
2. Greg Inglis
3. Justin Hodges
4. Steve Bell
5. Billy Slater
6. Jonathan Thurston
7. Scott Prince
8. Steve Price
9. Cameron Smith / Aaron Payne
10. Petro
11. Nat Myles
12. Sam Thaiday
13. Tonie Carroll

Interchange
14. Carl Webb
15. Kirk Reynoldson
16. Rod Jensen (or someone like him)
17. Matt Bowen

Reasons:

Sorry Darren, most of Queensland doesnt care what has been said in the past and what Queensland and the Bronco's needed when we had no halves. Fact of the matter is you played your best footy at fullback and ever since his move to five eigth has never been as great.

Hooker - Really don't know who to put in. Payney has been playing well but could be a little small around the ruck. Still have that vision of him trying to attach himself to Willie Mason in the Bulldogs match at the Cowboys 10th anniversary, and Willie litterally throwing him away. Would do some damage around the ruck and that's one of the major things that let the maroons down last night. When we had a play the ball there was just no momentum, no speed, no role on.

Halves - Don't think it matters if Thursty has the 6 or 7 on his back. Putting Prince in their would shake up the make up of the team. Too many times it goes to Darren and play is a second man play out to the left centre. Prince is just a tenacious little bugger who will take the line on every now and then and put a bit of worry into some of the bigger fellas. Without Darren in the halves, our attack could really take a new look.

Myles and Thaiday - when these blokes came on they aimed up. Thaiday got about the last 20 minutes... why not throw him out there when they were scoring points willy nilly, no one else was making the tackles.... whats the problem if he isnt either. Myles also went looking for their forwards in defence, trying to lay the smack down on O'Meley and Mason when he could.

Tunza - seen Tunza in the shops on the weekend - gee he is a big unit. Get him out their smashing people and busting the line. When he is fit and without injury he could really do some damage in Origin again.

Bell- Sterling said it all - "needs to be in traffic" and "needs to have his hands on the ball and thats hard to do on the flanks"

Billly - needed to put someone out there and we need some speed. Not suited to the wing spot but with no Sing and Williams..... Brenton could be a bolter though.

The Bench: Sorry guys as much as Bowen is one of "the" players of the nrl and one of the greatest players to watch, Willie proved why he is better off the bench. Nathan Brown said Wayne Bennett had created a monster by playing him of the bench and it was justified. In an Origin time enviroment when defence is the biggest issue for any team, he is better suited coming in and darting around. Probably one of the reasons why NSW kept finding room from their kicks last night was that Inglis and Bowen were constantly rotating between wing and fullback.... doesn't really allow either player to be in position to get to the kick on the full.

Charlie - leave he on the bench but someone please make him angry!

Reynoldson - this bloke has some mongrel and has only got better since playing with Joey. Unleash the Bushranger.

Rocket Rod - I have previously said on the forum that Rocket probably wasn't good enough for Origin. But we need him (or someone like him) to come on and inject some damn speed and passion into the match. Rocket is sometimes prone to a mistake, but gees, when he comes on with them legs going at 4000 miles an hour at the line, either in attack and defence, its good to watch and good for the team. Rocket (sorry to use this analagy mate) is like your dog when you play backyard cricket, he is always round the ball, trying to get it and when he does just takes off like his life depends on it.

Reasons for leaving players out:

Dallas - read so many stories about how he was the new Axe but he seemed to be on the receiving end of all the big hits. Wasn't that he didn't do anything wrong, just didn't seem to be doing anything

Scott - started - but not much seen of him in the watch. Didn't seem to have the same gusto as in the Cowboys matches.

Stagg- Good tackling machine for the Broncos but not much of a line bender. Need our forwards to be able to tackle and break the line.... not one or the other.

Berrigan - was probably the best of the bench last night but just didn't understand what he was there for in the first place. May serve some purpose to the squad if injuries play a factor.

Well thought out and I agree with most of it, but ..

Darren L - gone, enough is enough he should retire from origin with dignity.
Clinton Schifoski should be our fullback, and I agree Matty B is so much more dangerous of the bench.

Nate and Thaiday should start and have Webby on the bench, (and yes someone please make him angry as he was playing more like a pussy cat than a tiger)

But sorry.. Toni Carrol - No way, he is far too inconsistant.

I would have Slater at fullback and Bowen on the bench ...sorry Matty you were **** in defence last night. I thought Lockyer went well for most of the night ..missed a few tackles but so did most of the team. Lockyer's pass to set up the Ingliss try was awesome. Berrigan went very well too. Would like to see Stagg replaced. **** Tate off. Don't think they need to change too much. 7 debutants and they played like **** and lost by a point in NSW. They will be very hard to beat at home.

yeah slater is a great fullback to put in.
will ty williams be back by then or will he have to play club footy first.

I have to agree with some of these ideas. heres my thoughts.
Matty back to the bench, Lockyer to retire with dignity, Prince into the halves.
Crocker is out for the series, I would slide Inglis to fullback and bring Wesser in on the wing.
We had a heap of rookies in last night, maybe a bit to soon for a couple of them. Stagg didn't impress me much at all and I would replace him with the Bushranger at the drop of a hat. Matt Scott is going to be great down the track but I think he is not yet ready for full game Origin intensity. Also I think Ciconiceva is way past it, too slow and predictable and Price needs to get together with Charlie forget the bloody anger management classes.............
I think we need some mongrel in the engine room, the team missed Crockers aggression last night. I also think we need a Prop who runs hard and doesn't take a backward step. Ben Ross is out injured and Tronc is big but I think he will prove to be to slow for Origin, I don't mind if he proves me wrong though.

So here is my squad for Origin 2....

1. Slater
2. Wesser
3. Ingliss
4. Bell
5. Tate
6. Thurston
7. Prince
8. Shillington
9. Smith
10. Price
11. Thaiday
12. Webb
13. Myles
Bench. 14 Bowen, 15 Parker, 16 Scott, 17 Reynoldson

id like to see tate dropped as he hadnt playd much footy prior to the game which made him a poor selection.put in a better winger like ty if he returns or like thommo said wesser

Jordan

I don't think we need too many changes... we just need to get rid of Tate (he's a great player but he's just not ready for Origin football at this time in his comeback from injury), and we have to switch our backrow around. In hindsight, it was pretty stupid to have a backrow full of debutants- in the end that is what lost us the game, imo. They were overawed in the first twenty minutes and it let the NSW forwards (most of which are internationals) run roughshed over us.

I hope Lillyman plays for us this week. He built himself up a fair bit over the off-season and is almost like an O'Donnell clone now. We need someone like him who can offer a bit in attack, rather than just being a punching bag like Stagg or Johnson.

I'm thinking something along the lines of...

1. Matt Bowen
2. Billy Slater
3. Justin Hodges
4. Steve Bell/ Willie Tonga (please find some form)
5. Greg Inglis
6. Darren Lockyer (last chance)
7. Johnathan Thurston
8. Petero Civoniceva
9. Aaron Payne (Cameron Smith is just too slow for Origin football)
10. Steven Price
11. Nate Myles
17. Carl Webb (late inclusion, need more experience in the opening 20)
13. Dallas Johnson

14. Shaun Berrigan (one of QLD's best last night)
15. Matt Scott
16. Sam Thaiday
12. Jacob Lillyman (hope he hits form again fast)

The rest of your team looks pretty much spot on.

I agree with Jordan's team with David Shillington as another option for the bench if Lillyman doesn't get much time in first grade over the next couple of weeks.

The_Darkhorse

the only change i would make to Jordans team is Bowen on the bench , Slater to fullback, keep cameron smith and then offer Matty Sing whatever the **** he wants to play origin again.

I prefer Pemmy's team. I think we need Prince as half-back to help organise our attack... we had no structure at all last night. We can't keep relying on individual brilliance in attack - we need a game plan - and someone to help implement it...

i also think Bowen is better off the bench in origin...

i would put Webb in the starting lineup though. Get some mongrel in our go-forward from the outset..

Cameron Smith has to be hooker - he was one of our best last night and I would stick with Bell in the centres (he should never have been on the wing in the first place). Tate is gone and Slater would be welcomed with open arms...

I don't agree with carrol though - we need to blood the new guys... (Geez we missed Crocker!!!) What about Ashley Harrison at lock?? DJ just seemed to go missing....

Shillington (roosters?) may also be worth a look....

i like the look of that...but i think lockyer needs to retire...he was passing to the ground too often. bowen and slater would make a good 1 2.

personally i would like to see bowen keep one and even seen brenton in 2.
