NEW South firebrands Mark O'Meley and Willie Mason are prepared to launch a two-pronged assault on Carl Webb, with O'Meley predicting the Maroons enforcer is ready to "explode".

The pledge from the front-row duo came as Maroons great Trevor Gillmeister warned his state would raise their aggression for the series opener, saying last year's Queensland outfit was "too nice".

The intimidating Webb embarked on a one-man war in game one last year, inspiring the Maroons with a series of stinging shots on NSW prop Luke Bailey that led to an all-in brawl.

Former Blues hardman Mark Carroll later accused the NSW pack of being intimidated by Webb - and O'Meley is determined to ensure the Cowboys' wrecking ball doesn't wreak havoc again.

"Webby's an aggressive and powerful man. He'll be like a stick of dynamite, ready to explode, so it's up to us to counter that," said O'Meley, who will start from the bench after missing last year's series through injury.

"I don't know my exact role yet but I'll have to come out and dictate what's in front of me.

"I don't mind firing up - it's up to me to add some impact and lift the guys when I'm on."

Mason, who also missed last year's series win because of injury, believes the 2005 Blues pack was shaken by Webb's aggression.

The 2004 Clive Churchill medallist nominated his Bulldogs clubmate as the man to repel the destructive Cowboys forward, although he insists the Blues will not lose control of their emotions.

"He's got to come on and take Carl Webb on because he's their enforcer. He can change a game - but so can 'Ogre' [O'Meley] and I know Ogre won't be taking a backward step," said Mason.

"I think [Webb] intimidated a few blokes last year. He really pumped the Maroons up - he changed the game.

"Webb's an intimidating bloke and we know he's going to lift.

"We have to control him, but we won't be out to do stupid things. A single penalty can change the game, but if we can dominate them up front it will go a long way towards winning the game."

In an ominous statement of Queensland's intentions, Gillmeister called for the Maroons to up the ante in the aggression stakes.

"We've been too nice the last couple of years and that's not being disrespectful to the blokes - but aggression wins you games in Origin," said Gillmeister, co-opted by coach Mal Meninga during the week to help instil mongrel in Queensland's defence.

"I just think we lacked controlled aggression. Carl Webb's tackle last year was great but we need to get back to that across the board. We need the players as a whole to do that, not just one bloke."
