QUEENSLAND WIZARD CUP GRAND FINAL REPLAY

9th of May 2006

This Saturday's Queensland Wizard Cup grand final replay between the North Queensland Young Guns and Burleigh Bears will be held at Stan Williams Park, Cairns at 4.30pm, May 13.

Stan Williams Park is the home of Cairns Brothers and is found on Behan Street.

Some reports and advertising have listed the match as being played at Barlow Park at 3.00pm or 7.30pm. This is incorrect.

For interest's sake, the last Queensland Wizard Cup played in Cairns was on June 19 2004 when Redcliffe defeated North Queensland 32-20. That match was played at Vico Park, home of the Kangaroos club.

Young Guns fullback Jason Barsley, who played his 100th Queensland Wizard Cup game last weekend, began his State League career with the Cairns Cyclones and represented QLD Country from Cairns in 2000.

Guns Quicker to the Holster Again

EIGHT points now separate 2005 grand finalists North Queensland and Burleigh on the Wizard Cup ladder, yet Young Guns coach Mick Crawley is refusing to write off the Bears as a possible September threat.

After a special grand final rematch in Cairns on Saturday the score read 20-12 in favour of North Queensland. Consequently the Young Guns now sit equal first on the ladder, while Burleigh is in eighth.

However, to dismiss Burleigh by those statistics alone would be akin to folly warns Crawley.

“Afterwards the boys all said it was the toughest game they’ve played this year,” the Young Guns mentor revealed.

“There’s a fair bit of respect for Burleigh. They were very strong and there was very little difference to last year’s grand final pack.

“It was hard fought; a tough slog. They’re going to be hard to beat for the remainder of the year.”

Certainly there are permutations to take into account when considering the disparity in standings between the two clubs.

North Queensland is yet to experience the drain of the representative season, while Burleigh is coming to grips with a new style of coaching and is yet to welcome back forward leader Ali Brown from overseas.

On the other hand, were it not for a late converted try on the weekend, North Queensland would have won by a more convincing 20-6 margin.

The Young Guns were also missing captain Daniel Strickland and regulars Robert Tanielu and Shane Muspratt. Strickland succumbed yet again to a troublesome calf injury while the others travelled to Melbourne with the Cowboys’ NRL squad.

“I think we set the platform defensively,” said Crawley.

“It was a good effort when you consider who was out, although saying that we did have Jacob Lillyman back on board.”

Lillyman played all but the last 10 minutes of the clash against the Bears, experiencing cramping after an extended period on the sidelines with a meniscal tear in his knee.

The skilful back-rower was rated among his team’s best, along with Players’ Player recipient Ray Cashmere, hooker Clint Amos, centre Josh Hannay and half Brett Firman.

Crawley said he would face a tough decision with the return of Muspratt for next Sunday’s eagerly anticipated showdown with Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval. Against Burleigh he played Firman one side of the ruck and Brent McConnell on the other.

“I think it made us hard to defend against. Brett and Brent are both clever players who demand the ball. The defence had no way of telling which way to go,” he said.

Crawley said he viewed the expedition to Cairns as a success, with several Cowboys flags lining the highway on the trip north and plenty of young fans attending the game and requesting autographs.

NORTH QUEENSLAND 20 (Neil Sweeney 2, Mark Henry, Brent McConnell tries; Josh Hannay 2) d BURLEIGH 12 (Chris Barnes, Adam Hayden tries; Reggie Cressbrook, Phil Ramage goals) at Stan Williams Park, Cairns.
