EASTS v NORTH QLD

Langlands Park, Saturday May 6, 2.00pm *Live on ABC TV

THE STORY: Easts moves on to life without Darren Smith after he left the club as both chief executive and player this week. The Tigers flogged North Queensland 44-12 in a televised game from Langlands Park last year, however the red-hot reigning premiers have a much stronger side this time around.

Lowe's lengthy wait at an end

Ben Lowe can't wait to get back on the field after
his 2005 season was cut short through suspension

NORTH Queensland Young Guns forward Ben Lowe isn't making any bold predictions ahead of his long-awaited Queensland Cup comeback today.

The 21-year-old makes his return to the Young Guns line-up in today's televised match-of-the-round against Easts at Langlands Park after serving a nine-week suspension for a serious striking charge incurred late last season.

The suspension cost him a premiership with the Young Guns and what has amounted to a nine-month stint on the sidelines.

Before his enforced layoff, Lowe had become a regular face in the Young Guns' starting front row alongside his older brother Jaiman, now playing NRL for Souths, and Matt Scott, who has played all eight NRL matches for the Cowboys this season.

While eager to get back into the swing of things after becoming 'sick of the sight' of conditioner Billy Johnstone on the training paddock, Lowe said he was keeping his goals basic for the time being.

"I'm looking forward to it, it's been nine months since I last played," Lowe said before the Young Guns squad departed for Brisbane yesterday afternoon.

"At the moment I'm just going to take it one step at a time.

"I don't want to rush into things."

Lowe, who blew out the cobwebs for Centrals in the TDRL a fortnight ago, has trimmed down about 7kg after an extended off-season of cross training with Johnstone.

The effects of that have shown on the training paddock, with the mobile forward recently asked to join the Young Guns backs for sprint training.

"When I first got back from Toowoomba (in the off-season) I was 103kg but I'm now down to about 96kg," he said. "It was a target Billy had set for me.

"I'm feeling good. I haven't been on my legs as much with the riding, swimming and boxing."

In what eventually proved to be a wake-up call, the Young Guns were stunned 44-12 by Easts at Langlands Park in the corresponding game last year and new coach Mick Crawley said that loss hadn't been forgotten by many of the player.

Backrower Mark Dalle Cort will today join the Young Guns in Brisbane if not required to play for the Cowboys.

I only saw the last 15 minutes of the game. The Guns let a couple of soft tries in near the end of the game but the commentators said they were totally dominant in the first 60 minutes. They had lots of praise for Cashmere & Musspratt.

Saw Tanielu play and yes he did play very well. Imagine if they could get him to sprint and hit the line at full pace. It'd take a bit to stop him. Go big fella.

NORTH QUEENSLAND 46 D EASTS 16

8th of May 2006

AN ATTITUDE change and a two-try effort against Easts has North Queensland rookie Jamie Frizzo on track for a happy homecoming when the NQ Toyota Young Guns stage an exhibition match in Cairns next week.

Like Matt Sing, Travis Norton, Rod Jensen and Ashley Graham before him, Frizzo is the latest North Queensland player to return to the tropics after having a taste of the southern experience.

A former Junior Kangaroo and Bulldogs player, the 21-year-old three-quarter assisted the Young Guns to a 46-16 romp against the Easts Tigers at Langlands Park on Saturday.

The performance unveiled yet another star in North Queensland's backline stocks and consolidated Frizzo's claims for a spot in next Saturday's clash with Burleigh at Stan Williams Park, Cairns.

Frizzo, a Cairns Saints junior, missed out on the Young Guns' only other foray to his hometown this season – a pre-season trial against a PNG Development side which the Guns won 58-4.

"It's taken Jamie a while to find his feet here with the heat and the different way we train," revealed Toyota Young Guns coach Mick Crawley.

"We're much more physical and I think Jamie would admit that he struggled with that at first.

"But he has knuckled down and the last few weeks he's really concentrated on his training and is starting to reap the benefits."

Crawley described Frizzo as a handy all-rounder, standing 190cm and 98kg, but also possessing sharp footwork and speed.

Listed as a centre but playing on the wing at present, he joins a queue which contains Paul Bowman, Ashley Graham, Gavin Cooper, Josh Hannay and Mark Henry. Ty Williams will also return later this year.

Another player in the mix is utility Jason Barsley, who celebrated his 100th Queensland Wizard Cup game with a win over his former club on ABC TV. In the two previous televised matches between North Queensland and Easts at Langlands Park it was the Tigers who went home with the money – and convincingly too.

"All the players were telling me it's always a danger game at Langlands Park. We've been towelled up there before," said Crawley.

This time around however it was the Young Guns leading comfortably throughout, including a 26-0 advantage at halftime. Robert Tanielu was awarded man-of-the-match honours, with front row partner Ray Cashmere also strong.

For Easts the result marked the club's third loss in succession and followed Darren Smith's mid-week decision to depart the club on 99 first grade games.

NORTH QUEENSLAND 46 (Jamie Frizzo 2, Jason Barsley, Brent McConnell, Ben Lowe, Neil Sweeney, Scott Bolton, Robert Tanielu, Mark Henry tries; Josh Hannay 5 goals) d EASTS 16 (Mark Cantoni, David Tyrrell, Jamie Tomlinson tries; Luke Branighan 2 goals) at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Crawley praises Guns' big men

By ADAM GARDINI
08may06

NORTH Queensland Young Guns coach Mick Crawley rated props Robert Tanielu and Ray Cashmere 'above Queensland Cup level' after Saturday's 46-16 thrashing of Easts at Langlands Park.

With Tanielu and Cashmere laying the foundations up front, the Young Guns piled on nine-tries-to-three to register their third straight win and join Redcliffe at the top of the Queensland Cup ladder.

Former Bulldogs winger Jamie Frizzo crossed for two tries in his second appearance for his new club but it was the larger of North Queensland's off-season recruits who attracted praise from Crawley.

"We haven't played against two props that can do the job they do week in and week out," Crawley said.

"With our starting front row, most weekends, a lot of NRL coaches would be happy to have it.

"Those blokes are above Queensland Cup level and I think they play like that each week."

Although the pair are yet to play NRL for the Cowboys, Crawley said the consistent form of the duo in recent weeks had more than justified their recruitment and suggested they would be knocking on the door for an opportunity in the top grade.

Both were brought to the club to bolster the stocks in the forward pack after the loss of Paul Rauhihi at the end of last year.

"I think the Cowboys have done well in recruiting the two of them," he said of Tanielu, who had previously been contracted with Brisbane and Melbourne, and Cashmere, who came from the Wests Tigers.

"Both were after an opportunity and when you get guys like that it's not hard to keep them motivated."

Interchange prop Ben Lowe also made a successful return to the Queensland Cup against Easts, scoring a try in his first match for nine months.

The Young Guns face a tough fortnight ahead -- taking on Burleigh at Barlow Park, Cairns this weekend in a rematch of last year's grand final before facing Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval.
