Poor McConnell, he was the captain and now he has to accomodate for an out of form halfback.

Yeah, I'm with you. He's been doing nothing wrong & the majority of thing right & deserves a chaance to show what he's got in the top grade.

IPSWICH v NORTH QUEENSLAND

QLD Group Stadium, Saturday April 15, 2.30pm.
Referee: Shane Spicer

THE STORY: Despite the disparity in standings over recent seasons, Ipswich has always troubled North Queensland, particularly at QLD Group Stadium. In the same week that the Foley Shield kicks off in Mackay, former Cairns Marlin Joel Reithmuller plays his first game against his native region. Brett Firman saddles up for the Young Guns.

THE STAT: Last year Ipswich lost 26-28 to North Queensland at QLD Group Stadium, the start of an 18-game unbeaten run by the Young Guns. In the three seasons prior the Jets won 36-12, 32-16 and 34-4 over North QLD at the same venue.

THE STAR: In 2004 Hale Vaa’sa was the second-highest tryscorer from North Queensland, posting 11 tries in just eight games. Last year he became the international man of mystery, popping up at Easts and then Goodna. He has yet to score a try in four games for Ipswich.

CHANGES:
IPSWICH – In: John Dean. Out: Andy Poynter
NORTH QLD – In: Ashley Graham, Brett Firman, Robert Tanielu, Daniel Strickland. Out: Cameron Heading, Leigh Coghill, Scott Smith, Russell Aitken.

CHARGES: IPSWICH – Travis Baker (Grade 1 Dangerous Throw, Early Plea, 0wks + 93 carry-over pts).

Looks like they had a great first half but must have gone to sleep after that being outscored 12 - 34 in the 2nd half.

Geez they let through 36 points. That's a bit dissapointing considering the high standards both grades have on defence this year. At least they have something to improve on for next week.

Young Guns Survive Shaky Ride

ASHLEY Graham has scored two tries in his first game in North Queensland colours, helping the Young Guns to a 54-36 defeat of Ipswich at QLD Group Stadium.

After defecting mid-year from Parramatta the Cairns Kangaroos talent has been put in the queue with a host of players capable of playing NRL, but kept out by the great form of the Cowboys’ first graders.

Graham’s first assignment with his new club was a daunting trip to Ipswich, where the Jets have traditionally given the Young Guns a difficult time.

It was also the team’s first match back from a shock 54-16 thrashing at the hands of Tweed Heads.

There appeared no jitters in a punishing first half display, where the Young Guns ran ahead to lead 42-4 by the break.

A few stern words from coach Trevor Gillmeister obviously did the trick for the home side who showed sterner resolve in the second stanza.

After conceding another try to place the Young Guns ahead 48-4, Ipswich shot back with an unbroken run of 36 points.

Hale Vaa’sa grabbed his first Wizard Cup try for the Jets, playing against his old side, while veteran Travis Baker notched a double and rookie Jarrod Biggs continued to impress.

Minus linchpin Ricky Bird, Ipswich looked to more from playmaker Brendon Marshall and he showed signs of better things to come with a clever try from long range.

Despite letting the foot off the accelerator, the Young Guns were simply unassailable and scored again at the death to stamp their authority over the match.

Along with Graham, another player stuck in the logjam of backline talent at North Queensland is Jason Barsley, scorer of three tries on Saturday night.

At 28-years-old Barsley may not have that many opportunities left at NRL level, but again displayed why he has been one of the most consistently dangerous players at State League level.

With names like Graham, Bowen, Hannay, Firman and Strickland on the scorer’s sheet, an argument could be made that the weekend’s Young Guns side had more talent than some previous Cowboys line-ups.

The 2005 premiers take the next step in their title defence on Saturday, April 29 at Dairy Farmers Stadium against country rivals the Central Comets.

Ipswich faces Tweed Heads at the Piggabeen Complex next Saturday, April 22 at 2pm.

NORTH QUEENSLAND 54 (Jason Barsley 3, Ashley Graham 2, Brenton Bowen, Brett Firman, Daniel Strickland, Brent McConnell tries; Josh Hannay 9 goals) d IPSWICH 36 (Travis Baker 2, Hale Vaa’sa, Jarrod Biggs, Brendon Marshall, Joel Reithmuller, Isaak Ah Mau tries; Geoff Chalk 4 goals) at QLD Group Stadium.

Backline stars show ability in win over Ipswich
By Adam Gardini - Townsville Bulletin

New centre Ashley Graham scored two tries on debut and long-serving Cowboy Josh Hannay responded to his axing with a sterling performance in the Young Guns' 56-34 win over Ipswich on Saturday.
With the help of a star studded backline which also featured dumped halfback Brett Firman, the Young Guns got their season back on track with a nine-tries-to-seven victory at QLD Group Stadium.
The win ended a tough fortnight for the defending premiers, who had an extra week to dwell on a last start humiliating 54-16 loss to Tweed Heads due to last weekend's bye.
While fullback Jason Barsley scored three tries and picked up the players' player award, coach Mick Crawley praised the all-round attitudes of his established NRL stars, who were not involved in the loss to Tweed Heads.
He said Hannay and Graham had both shown their class while Firman and five-eight Shane Muspratt had guided the team around the park well."Josh Hannay was very good for us in the first half, he played as if he had a point to prove," Crawley said of the centre, who racked up 18 individual points courtesy of nine conversions.
"Ashley Graham certainly showed he's going to do a lot of good things for the Cowboys.
"I thought (in the first half) he and Hannay both looked like NRL players playing in the Qld Cup.
"We've been lucky with the blokes dropping back to the Young Guns.
"They don't come back and hang their heads, they really dig in."
Although Crawley was satisfied just to return to the winners' circle, the final margin could of been greater had the Young Guns fully capitalised on a commanding 44-4 lead at halftime.
"We played nearly to our potential in the first half but then we fell away a bit," he said.
"We started dropping a bit of footyin the second half and were up against a 9-1 penalty count.
"The boys were disappointed at the end of game that we fell away a bit."
The Young Guns came through the match without injury and now have another fortnight off with their round seven fixture against Central Comets to be played at Dairy Farmers Stadium on April 29.
All other round seven matches will be played next weekend.
